Applies to:

  • IIS v7 on Windows 2008/R2
  • Oracle client v11.x 64-bit

Symptom:

an exception “System.Exception: System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater” may occur when Combination of IIS v7, Oracle client v11.x and usage of “System.Data.OracleClient” is used on an on an ASP.Net application.

Cause:

“Authenticated Users” group must have read and execute access to “Oracle Home”

Solution:

Locate the “Oracle Home” folder on the web server, right click and select “Properties”. Go to “Security” tab, and locate the “Authenticated Users” group on the name list. If it’s not there, add it by clicking on the “edit” button, and proceed to add it with the button “Add” on the “permission” window, and give it the “Read & Execute” permission. Click the “OK” button to close the “Permission” window and back to the “Security” tab. Next, on the “Security” tab, press the “Advanced” button to go to “Advanced Security Setting”, and proceed to press the “Change Permissions..”. Highlight the “Authenticated Users” group from the list, and press “Edit”. On the next screen, make sure “Apply to” has “This folder, subfolders and files” selected, then press OK to save the change and close the Window. Press OK until all properties windows are closed, and reboot the server to make sure all changes are in effect
